Charles Ora Wilson, 91, passed away Friday, July 2, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. The son of Ora Deloss Wilson and Lillian (Alderson) Wilson, he was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was one of fourteen children.
Chuck served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in the Munitions Maintenance Squadron. He served in both Korea and Vietnam, as well as various postings around the country and the world. Chuck earned 2 Bronze Stars, and 2 Commendation Medals, as well as several letters of commendation throughout his service.
While stationed at Greenham Common, Newbury, England, Technical Sergeant Wilson met Wren Anne Boggett of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRENS) who was stationed down the road at HMS Dauntless in Burghfield, England. They were married in Reading, England, on May 14th, 1955, attended by friends from both military services, and with a WRENS honor guard. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
While at his last posting to Hancock Field, Syracuse, NY, Chuck retired from the Air Force and made New Windsor his home for more than 50 years. He then joined the U.S. Postal Service, retiring from there after 20 years of service.
Chuck was a member of the Vails Gate United Methodist church for over 50 years, serving on various committees and as an usher. He was especially proud of his work with the VGUMC Food Pantry. Chuck enjoyed bowling, participating on teams during both his military career and after his retirement. He also enjoyed camping with the family, cruises, and being on the computer. Chuck was an avid Mets fan and tried not to miss a game.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Anne, and four children, John (Diane) Wilson of Maybrook, NY, Joanne (Manuel) Ortiz of Whiting, NJ, Scott (Michelle) Wilson of Titusville, Florida, and Neil (Patricia) Wilson of Middle Hope, NY. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Heather (Dominic) Bonasio, Anthony (Carmie) Ortiz, Stephanie Wilson (Adam Schwaber), and Sean Wilson, as well as seven great-grandchildren, Dominic Bonasio, Nicolas Bonasio, Isabella Bonasio, Gianna Bonasio, Alex Ortiz, Julia Schwaber, and Evan Schwaber.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Vails Gate United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Vails Gate, NY 12584.
Chuck's family would like to especially thank Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties for their support during his time of need.
Memorial Visitation will be held 11 am - 12 pm on Monday, September 20 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave,. Newburgh, NY. A service will take place at 12 pm with inurnment and military honors following in Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen, NY.
