"James H. Lurton born Scott Co. KY Mar 21 1813. 4th child of Dr. Wm Lurton, who had a family of 9 children, six now living. Dr Lurton was a prominent physicial of KY. He removed to Morgan Co in 1833, where he resided til his death in 1839. James H. came to Morgan Co in Oct 1831, and lived on what is known as Jersey Prairie. He was Deputy sheiff for 3 yrs under Alexander Dunlap. In 1833 he was appointed by the co. court, Collector of Morgan Co., which position he filled about 4 yrs... then elected Assessor and Collected for several terms. Mr. Lurton was never defeated for any office... He resigned in 1850 and engaged in merchandising Jacksonville until 1862. Elected Colletor and Treasurer 1861 til 1869. Married Miss Mary Stribling. dau of W.C. Stribling. 9 children, 8 living. Oldest dau wife of Dr GB. Sarchette, a gentleman of French origin, residing at Terre Haute IN. Oldest son, Wm S, married, resides near his father, actively engaged in the ice trade.
Mr Lurton has given all his children advantages of good education. Early in life identified with Democratic party. When he became a citizen of Morgan co he had little capital... perservering asammed sufficient to make hi comfortable. Active public man for over 40 years."
