• Biography: Mrs. Anne Turpin is believed to be a daughter of William Ligon and Elizabeth Batte due to her husband's close relationship with that family; however, we are still searching for written documentation as proof. Anne became the first wife of Thomas Turpin Sr. in about 1750, and they had five children: William, Hugh, Richard, Henry, and Anne. The family lived in Amelia and Prince Edward Counties, Virginia.
Both Thomas and Ann Turpin signed as witnesses to the following deed: Prince Edward Co., VA Deed Book 1, p. 77, June 17, 1756: Joseph Ligon of Chesterfield County, in consideration of the sum of £100. current money of Virginia and 10,000 lbs. tobacco, sold James Ligon of Chesterfield County, land in the County of Prince Edward, on both sides of Sandy River, called "The Round Island," which land was devised by the late will of Joseph Ligon of Chesterfield County, to his son, William Ligon. Witnesses: Ann (X) TURPIN, Alexander (X) Womack, Thomas TURPIN, Rial Bowman. Recorded, July 13, 1756. Teste: John LeNeve, Clerk. Source: The Ligon family and Connections, Part II, Chapter XVII by William D. Ligon, Jr., 1947 (p. 544).
Mrs. Anne Turpin died sometime between the signing of the aforementioned document in 1756 and prior to the marriage of Thomas to his second wife Averilla Lewis in about 1763.
