• Biography: William Barker was born in Ohio, November 19, 1824. He moved to Iowa in 1852 and in 1856 to Scotland County, Mo., Where he has since lived until, November 6, 1900, when he departed peacefully this life, aged 75 years 22 months and 22 days.

He was twice married, first to Miss Lucinda Becraft, to which union was born five girls and two boys--two girls surviving him. His second marriage was to Mrs. May Brunk, a sister to his former wife, October 2, 2897. He was converted and joined the U.B. Church about 1865, where he has served most acceptably and effectively until his promotion. No man in the community had so great an influence for good. He was charitable to the poor and very liberal in the support of the different interests of the church, having given at least $3,000 to Avalon College. Just before his death he deeded fourteen acres of ground to the parsonage and said he would give $1,000 for the erection of a new church, which should stand as a monument to his memory and that of his wife.

He was elected by the Missouri Conference four and eights ago as its lay representative in the general conference, which covened at Toledo, Iowa, and Dayton, Ohio. His last words to his wife were, "I have done all I could for the cause." Memphis Reveille Nov 13, 1900 by Scotland County Genealogical Society.


William Barker was born in Ohio 1824,and married Lucinda Becraft. She was born in Kentucky, August 9 1823 and died August 1 1891. He married her sister, Polly Becraft. William Barker was a breeder of fine horses importing them from Frank, Belgium and England. He owned many acres of land and donated land and money to build Barker School and Church. (From the Martin Family History) One William Barker's daughters married Joseph Martin, she was Sarah Elizabeth Barker.(S.C.Historical Society).
