He had married Sarah Parker in the house he was born in in Millersburg on his 27th birthday, and on that same day he left for Illinois.

From his home in Kentucky, he went initially to Scott County, Illinois, where he lived till 1867,

Democratic representatives, Elected to Illinois Legislature from Scott County. This was the same time that Lincoln, from Illinois, lost the election for the U.S. Senate.

In 1867 he went to Jacksonville in Morgan County. There he was a Magistrate, County Commissioner, Colonel and was twice elected to the State Legislature, 27 District 20th & 21s. He was a member of the Methodist Church where he was a steward and trustee.
