From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 30th May 2002.

Mrs Mary Roberta Beecroft, (nee Barker) wife of Mr Thomas Beecroft, died of a stroke on April 16.

She was 78.

Mrs Beecroft, of Hillfoot Crescent, Stockton Heath, was born in Grappenhall and lived in Stockton Heath for 43 years.

She was employed as a teacher at Padgate Primary School for 10 years

Before her marriage in 1957 Mrs Beecroft lived in one of the cottages which feature in so many paintings and photographs of Grappenhall villages.

She was one of four brothers and two sisters, who were well known in the locality and used to help run popular folk dances in the village large room.

At the end of the War, and after leaving Lymm Grammar School she was briefly in the fire service and Navy, before finding her true vocation as a teacher.

Mrs Beecroft was fond of walking, an animal lover and supported many charities. She loved music, playing the violin for many years and worked tirelessly on behalf of the 'Friends of Walton Hall Music', as well as being prominent in the Civic Society.

Mrs Beecroft was always cheerful and full of fun and was known to light up a room when she walked in.

After her wedding she devoted herself in supporting her husband and daughter.

Mrs Beecroft leaves her husband, daughter, sister and three brothers.

A service was held on April 23 at St Wilfrid's Church, Grappenhall, prior to cremation at Walton Lea. The Rev Malcolm Kelly officiated.

Arrangements were made by W. Massey Cartwright & Son.
