• He appeared on the census in 1840. According to Joan Hacket, "The 1840 census lists only the head of household and just has marks for the other household members. Alexander C. Mills does not appear in 1840. I figured out why, he had mortgaged his personal goods, and in 1840, he his wife Matilda, and their three small boys appear as marks in the household of Matilda's father, David Garrett. He had no separate household."
