• Event: Ashland Tidings, 27 Mar 1916. High Schoolers Stage Carmen
Between five and six hundred people filled the auditorium at the high school Friday evening and witnessed "Carmen." staged by the musical department of the high school under the direction of Miss Harris. Brilliant costuming, elaborate stage settings, excellent eating and creditable music, both solo work and chorus, made the entertainment a most enjoyable and successful one.
The staging of an opera as difficult as "Carmen" is a big proposition for a high school of the size of Ashland high, and the results obtained speak very highly both of the direction of Miss Harris and the enthusiasm and ability of the participants.
Miss Alice Beecroft showed marked ability in her interpretation of Carmen, a most difficult role. She was by far the strongest character in the opera. Merrill Throne as Don Jose was also excellent, and the final scene, the most difficult of the whole opera, was staged with most realistic action on the past of these two. Elwood Hedberg as Escamillo and Pricilla Carnahan as Micaela pleased greatly with their singing. To give each of the minor characters the praise which is due them would require much more space than is available. The choruses, which in all included over fifty voices, were well trained and handled the difficult music of the opera with precision which spoke of long hours of hard work. The orchestra l accompaniment was good, as were the selections played between the acts by the high school orchestra. The scenery for the several stage settings were made by the manual training department and painted by the art department students.
Superintendent Briscoe in a few words before the rising of the curtain stated that all of the work on the opera had been done outside of school hours, and that to the best of his knowledge the school work of none of the participants had suffered. He highly complimented Miss Harris on her accomplishment.• She appeared on the Federal census in 1920 in Douglas, Oregon, United States. Name:
