Herbert IV was Count of Vermandois from 1045 to around 1080, known for his inheritance of the Valois fiefs and his alliance with the royal house of France through his marriage.

Biography and Origins
Born around 1028-1032, Herbert IV was the son of Otto of Vermandois, Count of Vermandois, and Pavia (or Parvia). He inherited from his father and became Count of Vermandois in 1045. In 1077, he also received as a fief part of the lands of his brother-in-law, Simon of Valois, thus becoming Count of Valois until his death around 1080.
Marriage and Descendants
Around 1059-1060, Herbert IV married Adelaide (also known as Alix), daughter of Raoul IV, Count of Vexin, Valois, and Amiens, and Adelaide of Bar-sur-Aube. This marriage established an important alliance with other great noble families of the kingdom.

They had at least two children:
Adelaide (c. 1062\endash 1122), who inherited the county after her brother's death. She first married Hugh I the Great, son of King Henry I of France, who then assumed the titles of Vermandois and Valois. After Hugh's death, she married Renaud, Count of Clermont.

Odo, known as "the Madman" (c. 1064\endash after 1085), was disinherited by his father, probably due to a perceived mental weakness.

Historical Role and Legacy
Herbert IV was notably present at the coronation of King Philip I of France. Through his marriage and the transfer of his lands to his daughter Adelaide, he brought the County of Vermandois directly into the orbit of the Capetian dynasty. After his death around 1080, his son-in-law, Hugh I the Great, became count, thus perpetuating the royal line in these lands.

This transition marked the end of the first House of Vermandois at the head of the county, of which Herbert IV was the last major representative.
Summary of Titles
Count of Vermandois (1045\endash 1080)
Count of Valois (1077\endash 1080, inherited from his brother-in-law Simon of Valois)
Herbert IV is thus a pivotal figure of the 11th century in the Picard nobility, embodying strategic dynastic alliances and the transmission of important fiefs within the French monarchy.

Adelaide of Valois, also known as Adelaide of Vexin, was an 11th-century French noblewoman from an influential lineage in northern France.

Origins and Family

She belonged to the House of Vexin, a powerful family that held several strategic counties.

Inheritance and Influence
In 1077, her brother Simon of Vexin renounced his titles to enter religious life.

The lands of Vexin were then divided, and Adelaide inherited Valois and Amiens, strengthening her husband's position.
