James was registered at birth as James Beacock on 28th June 1864 but later changed his name to Beacroft. Anecdotal evidence says he spent some time in the army in India and later was a butcher and a shepherd. The 1901 census shows him living in the village of Appleby with his wife, Emily and four children. His occupation is given as cattle man on farm and his birthplace as Sturton.
