WHO's WHO?

HELEN MUIR BURROUGHS
It was indeed my pleasure to visit with this gracious
lady in her lovely home at Warwick Forest.

Helen, one of 6 children, was born to Mary
Blanche and O.F. Muir in Belhaven, North
Carolina, located on the beautiful Pungo River.
Helen's grandmother, Lucy Selby Jarvis
founded the Methodist Church in Belhaven
which Helen attended until she left to make her
home in Newport News. Her grandfather, T.R.
Jarvis fought in the Civil War.
Before leaving Belhaven, Helen organized the
town's first Public Library and worked there for
two years. She also worked in several libraries
in Laurinburg, North Carolina and enjoyed
working as a Teacher's Aide. Helen came to
Newport News and enrolled in Business
College. Her first job after graduating found her
working as a secretary in the Medical Lab at the
old Buxton hospital for Dr. M.B. Beecroft, her
brother-in-law. Some of you will recognize the
Beecroft name - her nephew, Moss Beecroft
owned Beecroft and Bull Clothiers and in his
younger days was an outstanding amateur
golfer at the local, state, and national levels;
having won 6 State Amateur Championships
and other awards.
Helen met her husband, Jack Riggin Burroughs
in Newport News, and they were married in
1944. Jack was a Lt. Commander in the U.S.
Navy in World War II and served aboard the
Battleship USS Indiana, built in Newport News.
He was an educator having been a teacher,
coach, and principal during his career. Jack
died in 1995, but prior to his passing he was
inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at his
Alma Mater, Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, SD.
Helen and Jack were blessed with 2 wonderful
children. Mary Rosalind Whitley is a graduate
of JMU and now works for the Virginia State
Department of Education. Her son Jack
graduated from VMI and recently retired from
a 30 year career at Dupont. From these unions
were born 4 grandchildren; three girls,
Amanda, Laurin and Meredith, and for you
football fans, her grandson Justin had a brief
career with the New Orleans Saints.
Helen joined Yorkminster in April 2002. She
just loves the church and everyone who works
so hard to make it such a pleasant experience.
She rides the church bus on Sunday morning
and would love to see if full. She enjoys playing
bridge, reading, attending Circle #3 and being a
part of the Golden Saints.
When you attend church on Sunday, look for
this tall, stately lady wearing one of her
beautiful hats and extend the hand of
Christian love.
