WILLIAM SYDNEY MOORE
(2/10/1926 – 3/29/2005)

William Sydney Moore, 79, of Memphis, MO, died March 29, 2005, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.

He was born February 10, 1926 in Scotland County, MO, to Charles Holland and Myrtle Irene Myers Moore.

He attended Miller Grade School and graduated from Memphis High School with the Class of 1943.

He married Callie Dorene Becraft on November 28, 1942 in Macon, MO. To this union three children were born.

He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II from 1944 until his discharge in 1946. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Memphis, where he served as a deacon. He served on the Tri-County Electric Board and was a school board member.

Sydney was a well-respected cattle buyer. In 1964 he and his father built a cattle buying station known as C.H. Moore & Son Livestock, which they operated together until his father’s retirement in 1984, after which time Sydney continued the operation of the business until his retirement in 2000. He also farmed until the time of his retirement. He prided himself in his selection of good quality cattle and his farming operation.

He had a strong faith in the Lord and wanted to share that faith with others. He loved his family, his church family and friends and always greeted people with a smile. He received special joy from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As his illness progressed, he made special efforts to “tie up” loose ends by writing notes to people and having a clean-up sale at the farm. He enjoyed fishing, antiquing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Sandra Lee Orr and her husband, J.W. of Vidalia, GA and Mary Ann Kirkpatrick and her husband, David of Memphis, MO; a daughter-in-law, Judy Moore Piper of Pittsfield, IL; six grandchildren, Laurie Orr Jorgensen and her husband, Tom; Tracy Orr Born and her husband, Brady, Jennifer Orr Twisdale and her husband, LeRoy, Brandon Moore and his wife, Hope, Ryan Kirkpatrick and Andrea Kirkpatrick; six great-grandchildren, Schae Moore, Brock Moore, Brynne Moore, Kylie Jorgenson, Zeke Born, Braden Born, Parker Twisdale and Hudson Twisdale. Also surviving are a sister, Nancy Gifford and two nieces, Janis Gifford-Day, Mrs. Randy Frazee (Rachel Gifford) and a nephew, Holly Gifford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Charlotte Moore, who died in infancy, and a son, Charles Thomas Moore, who passed away in 1970 while serving with the armed forces in Viet Nam.

Funeral services were held April 1, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Memphis, MO, with the Pastor Dan Hite officiating and J. W. Orr assisting. Music was provided by Faye Humphrey, Arleta Dye and Schelle Cooley.

Burial was in the Edinburg Cemetery in rural Scotland County. Casket bearers were LaVern Weilbrenner, Jim Wood, David Kirkpatrick, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Brandon Moore, Keith Pulliam, Joe Doubet and David Myers. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Paul Lancaster, David Stewart, Leland Stott, Ellis Oberholtzer, Garth Lloyd, Gary Briggs, Richard Briggs, Joe Neese, Jr., Kenny Hustead, Mack Ketchum and Sonny Cantril.

Memorials may be made to The First Baptist Church, Missouri Baptist Children’s Home or the Edinburg Cemetery. Memphis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
