Ellis was born 11th Nov 1856, the son of Richard Shiers Markendale (a hide and leather merchant in Salford, Manchester). The Markendale family were quite wealthy and lived at 'Ordsall Hall' in Salford, Manchester from 1820 to approx 1870. Ellis was one of 4 children but was the only son to Richard Shiers Markendale.
Ellis played international rugby 30th Jan 1880, England vs Ireland. After marrying Kate there is no more info on him in the UK, other than an engraved plaque on a painting he gave to the directors of the Markendale Limited in 1908 in memory of his father (his father died Nov 1906)
Ellis is buried with his father and mother in parish of Burbage near Buxton, England; Buried on 11th May 1938 aged 81 years with no mention of wife Kate at the grave. 1
