STRINGFELLOW, NANNIE MADDOX (1891-1971). Nannie Maddox Stringfellow, entrepreneur and ranch owner, daughter of Amanda (Cowley) and Koger Thomas Maddox was born in Caldwell County, Texas, on May 6, 1891. Her parents moved to Texas from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, after the Civil War.qv Soon after Nannie was born the family moved to Velasco at the mouth of the Brazos River. Her father bought land on Cox Lake in Brazoria County, where he engaged in raising livestock and planted cotton and sugar cane. Nannie Maddox began a drygoods business in Freeport in 1916, after her father had been financially ruined by the great hurricane of 1915. Her business prospered, and she married Robert E. L. Stringfellow, a prominent cattleman in 1923. By 1932 she had assumed management of the vast holdings of land and cattle held by her husband. He died in 1941. She operated large ranches and greatly expanded the land holdings of her husband. She built and owned over 150 rental investment buildings, was a bank director, and had other diverse investments until her death on January 15, 1971. She and her husband were well respected and very generous to all philanthropies in Brazoria County. They had no children. She was very active in the Brazoria County Beautification Association, which sponsored the construction of parks and planting of wildflowers throughout the county. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Her estate was operated by her nephew in the 1990s.
