- Whitewater Region has been dealt a heavy blow as all three individuals killed in a single-vehicle accident on Sunday were from the municipality.

The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police notified the next-of-kin over the weekend and has now released the names of the people killed.

The driver of the Ford Ranger was identified as 46-year-old Michael Lemaire.

The adult female passenger was identified as 35-year-old Gloria Baycroft and the second female passenger was identified as 16- year-old Holly Baycroft, the daughter of the late Gloria Baycroft. All three are from Whitewater Region.

Mr. Lemaire leaves behind his wife Krista Towey. The couple did not have children.

Ms. Baycroft and Holly Baycroft were tenants of Mr. Lemaire.

Holly's father Derek Baycroft is very emotional about the accident.

"We will miss her," he said, his voice shaking.

It was his daughter's smile and love of animals that he remembers most.

"She was a very strong animal lover and wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up," he said. "She was always smiling and people would always talk about her smile. She was just happy all the time."

Mr. Baycroft said he will always treasure the time he and his daughter spent riding three-wheelers, motorcycles and snowmobiles.

Holly was a Grade 11 student at Opeongo High School.

The Daily Observer placed a call to the school but was told interviews were not being given. Instead, principal Steve Blok issued a statement.

"Opeongo High School is a really tight-knit community," the release stated. "We have lost a family member this weekend and we are all grieving."

The statement also said the school has made counsellors available to both students and staff members who need to talk about the loss.

"We appreciate the support of our community during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time," the statement concluded.

Laura-Lee Cartman wrote "...you were an awesome friend and a great person for anyone to get to know and talk to. We will all miss you so much and nothing will be the same without you."

Melanie Martin is the niece of the late Michael Lemaire.

"He was a very free-spirited individual and was always there to help if anyone needed a hand," she said. "This came as an awful shock. He was always one to drive the speed limit and with his seat-belt on. He was a cautious driver. He would say have fun but be safe."

Born and raised in Whitewater Region, Mr. Lemaire had recently moved back into the family homestead on Grant's Settlement Road.

Ms. Martin said he had proceeded to fix the property and also purchased back some of the original property.

"He was looking forward to getting more horses. Basically right now he was working the land," she said.

She said her uncle was well-known in the area and was also an entrepreneur.

Mr. Lemaire had operated the Broken Paddle Restaurant on Grant's Settlement Road near the region's rafting operations. However, as times got tough, he was forced to close the business.

Ms. Martin said he loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

"He was an animal lover that loved the wilderness," she said.

The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is continuing to investigate the crash which occurred Sunday on Forresters Falls Road in Whitewater Region.

Mr. Lemaire was driving a pickup truck when it went in the ditch for about 50 metres before striking a culvert and becoming airborne.

It struck a hydro pole and flipped over landing on its roof.

Mr. Lemaire and Holly were declared deceased at the scene.
