Alfred Giles was born in Kent. He came to Australia on the 'Lloyd' at the age of 23, arriving there on 1/8/1855. His brothers, Robert and John arrived on the 'Kate' on 7/11/1854. His brothers were living with a Mr. Richard Fawcett at Clydesdale. Robert was a witness at Alfred's wedding. Alfred lived at Rooty Hill and Mount Druitt. He is listed as being a greengrocer in St. Mary's in 1872 and came to Penrith in 1880 and lived on Henry Street. Three years before his death he lived with his son Alfred at Enfield. He was well known in the district and was associated with the local Methodist church when the first minister came to Penrith. When the local salvation army formed a corps, he became a member. He was an old railway servant and retired about 20 years ago after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Sons of Temperance lodge in Penrith. At the time of his death, he leaves behind three daughtes and two sons; Mrs. T Hodges (Penrith), Mrs. Lord (NZ), Mrs. Bradshaw (Redfern), Mr. John Giles (Canterbury), Mr. Alfred Giles (Enfield). There are 28 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was survived also by one sister and one brother in England and his brother Robert living at Mount Druitt. He is buried with his wife and granddaughter at St. Stephens Cemetery, Penrith, Rev J B Penman conducted the service in the absence of Rev Hatfield Hall. Mrs. Ensign Jones also spoke at the graveside.
