Roy D. Fultz
The tippecanoe river bridge on U.S. 31 two miles north of Rochester, scene of 39 traffic accidents since it was reopened as a one-lane structure Nov. 6, 1968, has claimed its first life.
Roy D. FULTZ, 61, R.R. 1, Rochester, injured at 5:30 a.m. Thursday in a car that slid into a tractor-trailer rig on the bridge, died in Woodlawn hospital at 3:47 p.m. the same day.
Investigating officers said today that Mr. Fultz did not appear to be seriously injured and was conscious when he was taken to the hospital.
However, doctors told Sheriff Homer CARR later in the day that Mr. Fultz had suffered a ruptured blood vessel in his head, concussion, fractured ribs on his left sice and that his left lung collapsed.
Mr. Fultz was riding in a car driven by Sherman R. HIVELY, 51, R.R. 3, Rochester.
Hively suffered a fractured right shoulder, doctors told the sheriff, and is a patient at Woodlawn.
The car was going north on U.S. 31 behind a semi-rig driven by Robert W. KAYLOR, 45, Indianapolis. As the vehicles were crossing the bridge, the car slid into the truck, the sheriff's office reported Thursday.
State police assisted the sheriff's office in the investigation.
The accident was the second one this year in Fulton county which resulted in death. On Jan. 3, Herbert B. POWELL, 55, R.R. 2, Argos, was killed instantly in a two-car crash on Ind. 25 a half-mile south of Rochester.
For more than 20 years, Mr. Fultz had been in inspector for the U.S. Air Forde at the Bendix corporation in South Bend. Before that, he had owned the former Bailey Beverage company in Rochester, which was sold to Ben Daulton Distributors a number of years ago.
Mr. Fultz was born Sept. 3, 1909 in Rochester to John and Adeline BECRAFT FULTZ and had resided all his life in this community. He was married Sept. 3, 1932 in Madison to Stella Von BAILEY, who survives. He was a graduate of Rochester high school and the General Motors Technical Institute. Mr. Fultz served in the Pacific with the Navy during World War II. He attended the First Christian church.
Surviving with the wife are two daughtrs, Mrs. Claude (Harriet Ann) JAMESON, R.R. 5, Rochestr, and Mrs. Allen (Caroline) STEPHEN, Rochester; four grandchildren, Sally Ann and Rachel Lynn STEPHEN and Charles David and Mary Ellen JAMESON; a brother, Dea FULTZ, Rochester, and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Rhea) THOMPSON, Rochester. Two sisters preceded in death.
Last rites will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. Josef PALAT officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday. The family requests that memorials other than flowers be made to the Manitou Training Center or the Heart Fund.
