Sam Howard Bass Jr.
Sam Howard Bass Jr., 76, of Houston (formerly of Freeport, Texas), passed away Saturday, May 3, 2003 at St. Luke's in Houston. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 am. Thursday, May 8, 2003 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1307 West 5th Street, Freeport, Texas with Bishop William E. Sterling officiating. The family will greet friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at the River House, 900 West 2nd Street, Freeport, Texas. Sam was a life long area resident and was the first justice of the newly created First Court of Appeals in Houston, appointed by and created by the then governor of Texas, Bill Clements. He was a two-term state representative, instrumental in the establishment of the local art community, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Frances Beacroft Bass; son, Robert E.L. Bass; sister, Mrs. John (Betty) Hamlin; and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that any charitable contributions in Sam's name be made to the City of Freeport for the Downtown Park Beautification Fund. Funeral services are by Freeport Funeral Home, 731 West 2nd Street, Freeport, Texas, 77541 (979) 233-5244.
