Myrtle M. Mjaanes

Myrtle Marie (Beecroft) Mjaanes, 102, a long-time Cumberland resident, died in the presence of her family on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Our House Memory Care in Rice Lake. On October 1, 1908, parents Amelia (Friske) and Herbert Beecroft delivered Myrtle into the world from their farm house in Almena, Wisconsin. She was soon the eldest of five siblings, brothers Herbie, Verne, Lawrence, Kenneth, and john who died as an infant. Myrtle rapidly learned to become an expert in cooking, baking, and cleaning.

Myrtle graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1926. She fondly remembered working as a dental assistant for Dr. Huff in Barron. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Erling Theodore Mjaanes. He was working as a window dresser for Erickson's (grocery) Store. Myrtle and her roommate Hazel Hogness had designed a familiar path through town that directly passed the store's window many times and caught Erling's eye. One day he saw her smile and followed her down the street. A romance developed and Erling and Myrtle were married on May 5, 1935 at the Barron County Courthouse. They celebrated with dinner at the Five O'Clock.

After managing the Erickson's Store in Almena the couple moved to Cumberland around 1941 where they operated the Erickson's Grocery Store (Holiday Village) until Erling's retirement in 1969.

Myrtle excelled not only as a bookkeeper and cashier at the store but also in keeping an orderly home. She found time to serve as an active member of the community, working with groups like Cumberland Women's Club, Degree of Honor, First Lutheran Church Women, Girl Scouts leader, Sewing Club, and Cumberland Women's Golf Association. Through her genuine love of being around and interacting with people, she volunteered her time through Degree of Honor by helping the elderly play bingo at the Extended Care Unit. She liked to feel that she was doing a service - making someone else's life a little easier.

Myrtle and Erling worked hard, but they also took time for leisure. They traveled extensively, including treks on the Queen Mary and the maiden voyage of the SS France, and wintered many years in Clairemont, Florida. They were both avid golfers into their 90's. Some of Myrtle's favorite things included: bird-watching, chocolate, bright, happy colors, people-watching, and flowers. Myrtle genuinely loved people, and she had a beautiful smile for everyone. Myrtle continued to wear that infectious smile for the staff and residents of Our House Memory Care where she received excellent care during the past few years.

Myrtle is survived by two daughters, Devonne (Rodney) Frisinger of Wittenberg and Jan Mjaanes Helgeson of Cumberland; four grandchildren, Terri (Richard) Hendrichs, Todd (Lisa) Frisinger, Lindsay Mjaanes Helgeson, and Jaime Mjaanes Helgeson; six great grandchildren, Brandee, Kaycee, Patrick, Katie, Nic, and Abby; eleven great-great grandchildren, and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Beecroft.

Myrtle is preceded in death by her husband and her five brothers.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 4, 2011 at First Lutheran Church, Cumberland, WI with Reverend Timothy Schmidt officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Cumberland, WI. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Friday at the Skinner Funeral Home - Cumberland and for one hour prior to service on Saturday at the church. Skinner Funeral Home of Cumberland is serving the family.
