Plying for Hire. - On Saturday morning, at the Police Court, Frank Beecroft, a cabman, was charged with having plied for hire off a licensed stand. He pleaded not guilty. Detective-Sergeant Bain stated that on the arrival of the Loongana from Melbourne on April 6 he saw defendant at the end of the shed on the wharf. He held up his hand to a passenger coming off the boat, and secured the fare. Beecroft was away from both the open and engaged ranks. Constable Twitchett corroborated the evidence of Sergeant Bain, and said that defendant could not give the name of the man who engaged him. Beecroft in a statement to the bench said he did not ply for hire. He had been engaged a week previously by a gentleman to meet him at the boat. Seeing his fare on board when the vessel came up to the wharf, he went over for him. He had got so disgusted with the life of a cabman that he had sold his vehicle. Superintendent Driscoll said that if Beecroft was engaged he should have been on the rank set aside for that purpose until called. It was not fair to the men who remained on the rank. The Police Magistrate told Beecroft that the bench did not believe his story, and fined him 10s, with 10s costs, in default of three days' imprisonment. The fine was paid.
