WALLINGFORD - Raymond G. Becroft, 95, of the Yalesville section of Wallingford, beloved husband of Mildred (Freeman) Becroft, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 at Masonicare of Wallingford.

Ray was born on Dec. 3, 1914 to Silas and Nettie Becroft, and lived in Wallingford his entire life. He worked for R. Wallace and Sons in Wallingford and then for C.N. Flagg Company in Meriden, as a hoisting engineer for over 30 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers for over 50 years.

Ray was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He entered into the military service in 1940 and was among the first troops sent to the South Pacific after Pearl Harbor. He served in the jungles of Papua, New Guinea and remained there the entire war. During his lifetime Ray, who was known to all as "Mr. B" was an accomplished bowler and golfer. He was a longtime member of Pine Valley and Southington Country Clubs. He was thrilled to have had the chance to play at Pebble Beach Golf Course in California. Ray also liked to entertain his family and friends with his yodeling and harmonica playing. He enjoyed writing poetry about his family and special events which were published in a book for them.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred, and his three children, Donna Lenart, of Seattle, Wash., Wendy Osgood and her husband, Art, of South Meriden; and his son, Gary Becroft and his wife, Judy, of Houston, Texas. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren of whom he was extremely proud, Michael Miller, Jennifer Miller and Lou Bell, all of Meriden, Dennis Lenart, of California; along with his honorary granddaughter, Nicole Townsend, of Meriden; his granddog, "Capone;" and many nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his brothers, Donald, Weldon and James Becroft; and his sisters, Doris Self, Vera Blakeslee and Hazel Eldridge.

The family would like to thank the staff at Masonicare Primary Care Physicians, the staff of Masonicare Home Health and Hospice and the Acute Care Unit at Masonicare for their exceptional care to Ray during his illness. Also a heartfelt thanks to their longtime neighbor, Agnes Tempe for all the help and caring through the years.

A memorial service with military honors celebrating Ray's life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. in the Hubbard Memorial Chapel located within Walnut Grove Cemetery, 817 Old Colony Road, Meriden. Arrangements are under the direction of The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville, CT. www.yalesvillefh.com
