Low voter turnout in primaries
By PAUL STONE, H-P Associate Editor

The Palestine Herald
Palestine -
Anderson County voters apparently were not overly excited about this spring's primary elections as roughly 19 percent of the county's more than 28,000 registered voters cast ballots Tuesday.

A total of 3,107 Anderson County voters participated in the Democratic Primary, while 2,287 people cast ballots in the Republican Primary for an overall total of 5,394, according to Anderson County Tax Assessor/Collector Teri Garvey.

Two years ago, a total of 6,377 Anderson County residents - or almost 23 percent of the county's registered voters - participated in the primary elections. The 2002 primaries also attracted a 23 percent turnout.

Anderson County Precinct 4 Commissioner Randy B. Watkins earned his third term in office Tuesday, defeating an opponent who was killed in a work-related accident in January just days after the deadline had passed to remove a name from this month's ballot due to death.

Watkins finished with 448 votes (73.6 percent) Tuesday in the Democratic Primary, while Mike BeCraft Sr. got 161 votes (26.4 percent).

BeCraft was killed on Jan. 13 near Normangee in a bulldozer accident.
