Harry Becraft

Harry Edward Becraft, 82, known as "Laurel's greatest farmer," died suddenly of a heart attack on Aug 22, 1986 at his home in Laurel.

Mr. Becraft was an avid farmer and gardener for many years, although he was a carpenter by vocation.

Mr. Becraft and his late wife owned a large farm for 30 years on Route 198 where the UPS facility is now located. He sold the farm before I-95 was built in the early 1970's.

After moving to Julie Lane in Laurel, Mr. Becraft continued to grow a large vegetable garden for many years. Folks all over Laurel bought vegetables from Mr. Becraft and he was particularly known for his strawberries.

Funeral services were held Aug 25 at Donaldson's Funeral Home with the Reverend Roby Eastridge officiating. Burial was held in Union Cemetery, Burtonsville.

Mr. Becraft was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Becraft and Mary Louise Kruhm Becraft. His wife, Edith Sellers Becraft, died in April 1985.

He is survived by a son, Wayne E. Becraft; a sister, Ella Ray; three brothers, Louis, Arthur and Auston Becraft; and three grandchildren, Michelle, Jeffrey and Mark Becraft.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
