In 1900, the year their first child was born, Fred was working as a tinsmith and living with his mother in Utica. In 1910, Fred and Jessie were renting a house on Schuyler St. in Utica. Fred was working as a laborer in a coal yard. Only two children were living with them, but Jessie reported that she had given birth to 6 children with 5 still living in 1910. By 1920 Frederick was again living with his mother and gave his marital status as single. He was working as a janitor in an apartment building. In 1930, Jessie was living in Utica on Varick St. She reports having married for the first time when she was 17 years old. No children were living with her. In both the 1920 and 1930 censuses children who were most likely the children of Fred and Jessie were listed as living in the House of Good Shepherd, an orphanage in Utica.
