Elijah most likely moved with his parents to Michigan at the age of 14, but was not living with them by the time he was 18. At the age of 24, he married Flora, who was 14 years old and living with her parents in Vermontville, Michigan. The following year, their first child was born there. In 1885, they were living in Kentucky and by 1891 had moved to Wisconsin. On both the 1880 and 1900 censuses, Elijah's occupation was listed as farmer, but he may have worked for a railroad company as family tradition says that he died in Indiana while working for the railroad.
