Hyattsville Fire Kills Man, Damages Home
A Hyattsville man was killed last night in a house fire that officials say may have been set by the victim himself, Prince George's County fire officials reported.
The dead man was identified as Benjamin Henry Becraft Sr., 64, of 6104 42d Pl. His body was found in the kitchen of his home several hours after the 7 p.m. blaze, officials said. Becraft was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire Insp. Ward Caddington said early today that there is "a possibility that the fire was set by the victim himself."
Caddington said he believed the fire began in the living room of Becraft's two-story frame home. The fire caused an estimated $30,000 damage to the house, he said. The county fire marshal's office is investigating the blaze.
