Earlier occupation was as footman. According to his funeral notice he was a footman at Belvoir Castle, Newstead Abbey and Bestwood Lodge and possibly at Dunham Massey, Peover Hall and 47 Portland Place from where he joined the Royal Navy. He was a member of a Morris Dance team while employed in the Altringham area. He was head caretaker of Swanwick Hall School until his untimely death. He was an avid reader and taught himself to be a skilled carpenter and painter and decorator. During WW2 he was secretary of the village Comforts Fund and an Air Raid Warden. The 1901 census shows him living with his parents and three siblings in Appleby.
