Clarence A. Wistrom, Spooner, Wis., died on his 96th birthday, Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005.
ntblHe was born Jan. 18, 1909, at Almena to Alfred and Annie (Beecroft) Wistrom. He graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1927, having never missed a day of school.

He married Ina Devereaux on June 21, 1939, at Hudson.

He retired from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resourses on Jan. 31, 1974, after 38 years of service with the fish management program. He began his career as a laborer at the Haugen Fish Hatchery in 1936. He worked at various fish hatcheries and also served as a deputy game warden between 1936 and 1940.

He was assigned as a permanent fisheries aide on July 1, 1940. He was promoted to a fish hatchery foreman in 1942, field foreman in 1946 and finally a fishery area coordinator in 1948. Following reorganization of the DNR in 1969, he became a fishery staff specialist until retirement.

During his career he supervised many new employees, guiding their development. He was in constant contact with the public and gained many friends. Unfortunately, like others his age, most of his friends and former colleagues passed before him.

Many things interested him. His activities included photography, extensive traveling, gardening, hunting, fishing, working with carpentry and playing cribbage.

He was a voracious reader and had a remarkable memory. He was a good and honest man who imparted positive values on many people. He will be missed by those who are left.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 65 years are sons, Alan (Diane) of Eau Claire and Gary (Sherri) of Kenosha; grandchildren, Brenda Leith of Eau Claire and Eric Wistrom of Kenosha; a great-granddaughter, Amber Klawiter of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Marquardt of Spooner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Linda Wistrom; and a brother-in-law, Arnold Marquardt.

Services were held on Friday, Jan. 21, from the Spooner Wesleyan Church, Rev. Ronald Gormong officiating. Music was provided by Faith Tasker and Phylis Woebke.

Pallbearers were Alan Wistrom, Gary Wistrom, Eric Wistrom, Jack Donatell, Charles Johnson and Stan Johannes.

Scalzo-Taylor Funeral Home, Spooner, handled arrangements.
